Ella Residence

As a result of the pandemic, working from home became the norm which encouraged homeowners to improve and remodel their property. This project came to me from a close family member who wanted to redesign their existing kitchen and bathrooms to feel open and modern. The house consisted of three male friends, and the owner wanted a contemporary common space for them to enjoy. The kitchen I designed features a handsome material palette and open space concept into the living room. To achieve the open floor plan, the wall dividing the kitchen and living room was demolished and replaced with a marble bar counter with a waterfall edge – acting as a bridge between the two spaces.

In addition to the kitchen remodel, the client wanted design ideas for the bathrooms. Below are the renderings of the proposed guest and master bathroom. Although the new bathrooms weren’t constructed per the proposed design, these renderings helped influence the direction.

Construction for this project ended in late 2021, however the client is now interested in reviving the outgrown backyard and exploring landscape design options. Below are some initial plan options – one of the iterations represents a light remodel, while the other is a full remodel.

Kodiak Dining Hall

Kodiak Sciences is a biotech company that bought a lease on an empty shell building in Palo Alto, California in 2019 and hired architects, engineers, contractors, and various other consultants to develop and construct the interior and exterior spaces. During my time with BCV Architects, I was a key player in a small team and pushed this project throughout all phases, starting from conceptual design all the way through construction administration. Our four-person team was brought on to design the hospitality spaces (lobby, patio, kitchen, and dining hall) which accounted for about 18,000 square feet, with the remaining 100,000 square feet dedicated to office and lab space taken on by another architecture firm. The dining hall was our main focus, which features a glass box exhibition kitchen that faces out to dining bays, with an adjacent café, lounge, and private conference room.

This project was developed during the pandemic, so it was important to the client to have an outdoor patio space to enjoy where employees could eat, lounge, and on special occasions, cook using the outdoor kitchen. Another major aspect the client wanted was to maintain good ventilation in the dining hall, so our team developed a sliding window system that butted up against the existing mullions and could allow large openings to the outside.
